ALOHA MEANS
a program to KNOW AND LIVe ALOHA
Program mission - uplift positive Kanaka Maoli-Native Hawaiian identity through cultural education.
ʻŌlelo ʻŌiwi-Hawaiian language is central to a thriving Hawaiian culture. Of importance is the nuance and thought behind the language. The concepts of "we and us" must always be before "I", the understanding of Pono-to be in balance and Aloha-deep affection must be lived. Your support enables us to create and share the stories, values, customs, and language of the kanaka maoli - Native Hawaiians through engaging books, videos, games, and digital content to perpetuate Aloha in the world. We envision a thriving and vibrant Hawaiʻi where living Aloha is a way of life and the Hawaiian language is commonly spoken. Mahalo - Thank You for your support. |

hawaiʻi aloha
Hawai'i Aloha Project - Launching School Year 2022-2023 (Aug 2022 - May 2023)
To love Hawaii is to know its stories and ancestors. The Hawai'i Aloha project is to provide the public an understanding of Hawaiʻi according to the perspective of Native Hawaiians using technology and digital story telling.
The project works with High School, Hawaiian studies classes to develop digital stories of every island's moku-district that will be placed on an interactive digital map. See the digital story of Lā Kūʻokoʻa below!Hawaiʻi Aloha-Love of Hawaiʻi is a project focused on preserving the deep cultural stories and world view of Native Hawaiians and long-time community residents. In this project, our goal is to tell the story of each ahupuaʻa (a traditional land division, typically from mountain to sea) in Hawaiʻi. We will look to identify the myths, heroes, traditional uses, history, and stories of each wahi-place.
Our team has linked up with Bay Park Data Solutions, a certified nonprofit ESRI partner to develop a mobile friendly learning app. Through ESRI's powerful GIS (Geographic Information Mapping-System) platform, we will be able to literally put stories on the map and immerse folks into a authentic and meaningful Hawaiʻi 2D and 3D experience!
We will look to gain community engagement and spark STEM learning by working with 6th grade classes to compete in which class can tell the best story of their district's ahupuaʻa. We will encourage students to reach out to their elders and identify pearls of wisdom that can be shared for next generations. Our team will work with the school groups to take their finding and shape it into a professional product.
The project is intended to serve three purposes.
1. Provide a high-level cultural experience for visitors interested in learning more about Hawaiʻi.
2. Provide powerful and engaging educational content for teachers to augment into their lesson plans.
3. Provide deep-level learning reserved for next generations who commit to taking the kuleana-responsibility to mālama-serve and care for their ʻāina-land.
Below is an example of a "StoryMap" we created to share the story of Honokahua, an ahupuaʻa in the moku-district of Lāhanai on the mokupuni-island of Māui. 2D stories like these will be embeded into a larger interactive map along with AR experiences so youth, residents, and visitors can all take a virtual field trip to Hawaiʻi from anywhere in the world!
